What this job involves
We start at the thermostat and work outward. A technician confirms the call for heat is reaching the equipment, then watches the outdoor unit go through a cycle to see whether the reversing valve actually shifts. From there we read pressures and temperatures, check the defrost control and sensors, and look at the indoor blower and coil. On dual fuel setups we also verify the gas side and the changeover logic. You get a plain description of what we found and what the repair takes.
What we check and repair
Common findings include a reversing valve solenoid that has failed, a defrost board or sensor that leaves the outdoor coil iced over, a bad contactor, a weak capacitor, or refrigerant loss from a leak. We also see auxiliary heat strips that never energize, which makes a mild day tolerable and a cold snap miserable. Ductwork running through hot attics loses capacity too, so we measure airflow and static pressure rather than guessing. Repairs are handled on site when parts are on the truck.
How we decide it is the right call
If the system is cooling fine in summer but blowing cool air in winter, the problem usually sits in the heat mode components, and that points straight to this repair. Age matters. A heat pump with a leaking coil, a failing compressor and a decade of runtime behind it may cost more to patch than to replace, and we will tell you that instead of selling parts. If the fix is a sensor or a capacitor, we repair it and move on.

Why is my heat pump blowing cool air?
Most often the reversing valve did not shift into heat mode, or the system is low on refrigerant. It can also be stuck in a defrost cycle. Check the thermostat is set to heat, then call us for diagnosis.
Is ice on the outdoor unit normal in winter?
A light frost that clears during a defrost cycle is normal. Thick ice covering the coil for hours is not, and it usually means a defrost sensor or control board failed. Turn the system off and call us.
My backup heat runs constantly. Is that a problem?
It often means the heat pump itself is not producing heat, so the auxiliary strips or gas furnace carry the whole load. That drives up runtime and cost. We test the heat pump stage to find the real fault.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the symptom
Call or fill out the quote form and describe what the system is doing. Warm air, short cycling, water on the floor, a smell, a noise. That detail tells us what parts to load on the truck.
- Step 2
We diagnose on site
A technician checks the thermostat, the electrical side, airflow through the filter and coil, refrigerant behaviour and the ductwork. You hear what we found in plain language before anything gets replaced or repaired.
- Step 3
You approve the fix
We explain the repair, what it costs and what happens if you wait a season. Nothing gets done without your go-ahead, and we tell you honestly when a repair no longer makes sense.

Why homeowners call us
- We know humid-climate systemsAcross the region the real enemy is moisture. Systems here run long hours pulling water out of the air, and that shows up as frozen coils, clogged drains and mildew smells. We diagnose for humidity, not just temperature.
- Mixed gas and heat pump workPlenty of homes we visit run a heat pump with gas backup, and the two have to hand off cleanly. We troubleshoot both sides, including defrost boards, reversing valves, ignitors and heat exchanger concerns.
- Attic ductwork is our daily breadMid-century homes often have ducts running through attics that hit brutal temperatures. Crushed runs, disconnected boots and leaking joints steal cooling before it reaches the room. We find them instead of blaming the equipment.
- Repair before replaceA capacitor, a contactor, a blower motor or a clogged drain line fixes a lot of the calls we take. We would rather fix what you have and tell you plainly when the numbers stop working.
