What the job involves
A heat pump is supposed to frost up in cold, damp weather and then melt that frost off on a timed or demand basis. When defrost fails, ice builds on the outdoor coil until airflow stops and heating output falls off. We watch the unit through a full cycle, force defrost at the board, and measure what the sensors are reporting against actual coil temperature. That tells us whether the problem is the control, the sensor, the reversing valve, or airflow across the coil.
What we check or replace
We test the defrost control board, the coil temperature sensor or thermostat, the reversing valve and its solenoid, and the outdoor fan motor that must stop during defrost. We confirm the auxiliary heat strips or gas backup are staging correctly, since a bad defrost often hides behind expensive backup heat. Drainage matters too. In our humidity, a clogged base pan or a unit sitting low in wet ground refreezes faster than the cycle can clear it, so we address that as well.
How we decide it is the right call
We look for a pattern before we replace parts. Ice only on the bottom of the coil usually points to drainage or low airflow. Ice over the whole coil with a unit that never reverses points to the board, sensor or valve. Short cycling in and out of defrief every few minutes points to a sensor reading wrong. If the compressor is failing or refrigerant charge is off, defrost symptoms show up second, so we verify the basics first and tell you plainly what we found.

Is some frost on my heat pump normal?
Yes. A light coat of frost in cold, damp weather is expected, and the unit should clear it within a cycle. Thick ice that stays for hours, or covers the top of the coil, is a problem worth a visit.
Why does my heat pump blow cool air for a few minutes?
During defrost the system runs in reverse to melt coil ice, and backup heat usually covers the gap. Brief cool air is normal. Long stretches of cool air suggest backup heat or the defrost control is not working.
Can I pour hot water on the ice myself?
We do not recommend it. Water refreezes fast, can crack the coil, and does nothing about the failed sensor or control causing the ice. Shut the system to emergency or auxiliary heat and call us.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the symptom
Call or fill out the quote form and describe what the system is doing. Warm air, short cycling, water on the floor, a smell, a noise. That detail tells us what parts to load on the truck.
- Step 2
We diagnose on site
A technician checks the thermostat, the electrical side, airflow through the filter and coil, refrigerant behaviour and the ductwork. You hear what we found in plain language before anything gets replaced or repaired.
- Step 3
You approve the fix
We explain the repair, what it costs and what happens if you wait a season. Nothing gets done without your go-ahead, and we tell you honestly when a repair no longer makes sense.

Why homeowners call us
- We know humid-climate systemsAcross the region the real enemy is moisture. Systems here run long hours pulling water out of the air, and that shows up as frozen coils, clogged drains and mildew smells. We diagnose for humidity, not just temperature.
- Mixed gas and heat pump workPlenty of homes we visit run a heat pump with gas backup, and the two have to hand off cleanly. We troubleshoot both sides, including defrost boards, reversing valves, ignitors and heat exchanger concerns.
- Attic ductwork is our daily breadMid-century homes often have ducts running through attics that hit brutal temperatures. Crushed runs, disconnected boots and leaking joints steal cooling before it reaches the room. We find them instead of blaming the equipment.
- Repair before replaceA capacitor, a contactor, a blower motor or a clogged drain line fixes a lot of the calls we take. We would rather fix what you have and tell you plainly when the numbers stop working.

- Straight answersNot worth fixing? We say that out loud, and often it saves you the visit fee.
